Disgusted with food donations?

For the last week I have been looking to donate food in Los Angeles and found only one or two places available. None of these places seemed like the greatest place to donate, since the overhead and waste in these places seems so colossal. From what I have been able to find on the internet, there is such a tiny number of charities, which will accept even canned and sealed food donations to feed the people. Is the economy in such great shape that we only need 1-2 charities to feed all the hungry in all of Los Angeles. Or do none of the charities want to bother with such tedious and non profit generating activities as accepting food to feeding the large number of hungry out of 15 Million people in Los Angeles? Seems like there is a donation center on every corner, which will take money and goods to be resold, but don't want to be bothered with food.
